August Heat by William Fryer Harvey

The following endings for "August Heat" were written by students at Owen J. Roberts Middle School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.  Writing an ending for "August Heat" provides excellent practice in inferring—or a chance to use ingenuity to save James and Charles from their presumed fates.  Students must also be careful to avoid anachronisms.  The following endings are notable for a variety of reasons, among them outstanding diction and descriptiveness, fluid style, and creativity.

Ian’s ending is notable for its exciting style and its creative conclusion.

Adam’s ending is noteworthy for sheer creativity.

Dan’s ending is suspenseful and creative.

Rachel, as you will see, is quite a competent writer for a twelve-year-old.

Butch’s ending is very descriptive.

Julie’s story is both suspenseful and creative.

Heidi is very descriptive and writes marvelous dialogue.

The authors of the next three endings prefer to remain anonymous.
